Monarch of the Seas - THE DAMAGE!!

A PARNAMI Cruise Page
In the early morning hours of December 15, 1998, Royal Caribbean's Monarch of the Seas made an unscheduled stop in Philipsburg, St. Maarten to drop off a passenger with a medical emergency. Upon departing, she hit an underwater shoal and began taking on water. Immediately, the Captain turned the vessel around, heading for shallow water, running her aground on a bed of sand. These pictures show the reason why!

The cost of repairs? USD $41,000,000!
