Diplomat, poet, adventurer
Wilfrid Scawen Blunt was Lucy's great grandfather. He started his career with the British diplomatic corps in Argentina, later married a young aristocrat who was the only descendant of Lord Byron. They travelled the Arab countries on horseback, staying in Jiddah in the Arabian Peninsula in the 1880s, and living in Cairo. Blunt was strongly opposed to British subjugation of Egypt, and even went so far as to attempt to export arms to support the Khedive of Cairo. Thus he was politically opposed to John Stokes' activities in Egypt, so it must have been interesting to have been a fly on the wall during their meeting. See Blunt's diary entry of their discussions. He was also a fervent supporter of Irish Home Rule, and served time in prison for this support. He was a close friend of many English poets at the turn of the century. He died in 1922 and was buried in Muslim style on the Newbuildings estate, now owned by Lucy's brother John.
