The above photograph was taken in 1943, when Irwin joined the Australian Army during the war against Japan. Irwin was born on January 14, 1925, one of a pair of twins who were the last-born children of Charles Hartley Stokes and his wife Laura Gladys Poynton. Gladys was one of several daughters of Edward Poynton. Irwin was adopted by Edward's childless brother Joseph James Poynton, and his wife Minnie after Charles Hartley Stokes' accidental death. Irwin took his stepfather's surname.
Irwin's siblings included Edward Stokes, Joseph Clement Hartley Poynton, Laura Joan Stokes and
his twin, Valery Paton. Only his two sisters survive at the time of writing. Irwin's children from his marriage to Ailsa Gwyneth Compton were Charles Edward Poynton, Anthony Irwin Poynton, James Spencer Poynton, and Jennifer Susan Poynton. Biographical material about Irwin Poynton. Return to Charles. Exit from the homepage altogether.
