This policy is given in writing to the student at the beginning of each course and is kept in their portfolios. It is also given to parents at open house. Please contact me about any questions or discussion.
Grading is an attempt to assign a mutually understandable value to performance of certain tasks. The definitions of particular letter grades and level three courses at Merrimack high school may be found in the student handbook and on the back of a separate hand-out. This memo clarifies what kind of evaluation will be performed and the weight assigned to them. All grading information sheets should be reviewed with your parents/guardians and must be kept in your portfolio for further reference.
Each student will be assessed formally or informally in all skill areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar/vocabulary, and cultural knowledge, based on the objectives covered in the lessons of the particular course. Evidence of assessment will be kept in the student's portfolio. Performance-based quizzes will be given in all skills. Department-wide standardized tests and quizzes which accompany the textbook will be used during and at the end of each unit or chapter.
Quarter grades will be based as
follows:
25 % homework = correct assignment, on time, completely done, used your book, legible, etc. Good idea to retain them in your notes for further reference.
25 % tests = announced in advance, cumulative, standardized or teacher created, cover multiple topics and skills (includes listening, grammar, writing, etc), corrected in class and kept in portfolio. May include take-home tests and larger projects. Grammar and vocabulary notebooks will count as tests.
50% quizzes = usually single topic and announced in advance, oral, listening or written; corrected afterwards in class and kept in portfolio in the classroom for further study and reference. May include shorter projects. For most chapters or units at least one quiz will given in each area of : culture, listening, reading, writing, speaking, and grammar/vocabulary. Examples:
Culture: quizzes/projects in English or French based on classroom material, readings or Internet material.
Writing: original directed compositions or dialogues
Reading: authentic material such as Internet pages, newspaper articles, comic strips, or a story in target language + questions
Speaking: skits, question + answers, interviews, show'N'tell
Grammar/vocabulary: quizzes on verb forms, translation, vocabulary
Listening: video or audio material + oral or written questions
Semester exams are worth 20% of the semester grade.
The test and quiz and homework grades are mathematical averages of the total points received divided by the number of evaluations then multiplied by the percentage value.
