Istanbul's houses can be divided into seven categories: palaces, kasırs (imperiallodges or small palaces), kosks (large detached houses or mansions), yalis (waterfront houses along the Bosphorus), attached houses, detached houses and adjoining apartment blocks.
As the 19th century set in, the traditional relationship of theTurkish house to its environs, and a tranquil, rational and uncluttered spatial concept were displaced by foreign influences. It is therefore best to draw conclusions about traditional Turkish architecture only on the basis of houses dating from the 18th century and earlier. For an early 15th.century example, see below;
