Below is the aerial ferry that was the transportation link to North Bend
from Boston Bar until 1986. It only carried one car at a time and took about 15 minutes
to load a car and cross the river. At times the line up to go to Boston Bar was tremendous,
One could wait upwards of 3 hours just to cross the river. When the ferry was shut down for
maintenance work, tug boats were used to move people from one side to another.
For practical reasons the Cog Bridge was built in 1986.
This opened North Bend and the Nahatlatch to the world.
Since then tourism has been steadily increasing to the area.
One popular destination is the Nahatlatch River,
world famous for it fantastic white water rapids.
This picture was taken in 1986 when the ferry was running.
(There was only one other ferry in the world like it.)
