May, 2001 :

  • Europe puts Sharon on the spot to halt bloodshed -
    The European Union, in its clearest statement yet on the Middle East, said Wednesday (May 16, 2001) it was up to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to make the first move to end seven months of spiraling violence with Palestinians.

  • Palestinians mark Nakba -
    Since that ominous day in May 1948, the Palestinian people have been paying the price of this injustice and the Nakba, in all its appalling manifestations, has been relived day and day again.  No other nation has suffered a similar fate in modern times: the uprooting, the ethnic cleansing, the massacres, the humiliation and the intimidation. The most ironic reality about the Palestinians today is that the historic injustice of the Nakba continues to be perpetrated until today.

  • Islamic bank to fund reconstruction in Palestine -
    Chairman of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Ahmad Mohammad Ali announced on Sunday (12/10/2000) that the bank has begun receiving contributions from the Arab countries in the Jerusalem and Intifada funds.

  • General Assembly adopt six resolutions on Palestine question -
    The United Nations General Assembly today (Dec 01, 2000) concluded its consideration of the situation in the Middle East and the question of Palestine after voting to adopt a total of six resolutions on those agenda items.By the terms of a resolution on Jerusalem, adopted with 145 Member States voting in favour, 1 against (Israel) and 5 abstentions (Angola, Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Nauru, United States), the Assembly determined that the decision of Israel to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration on the Holy City of Jerusalem was illegal and, therefore, null and void. The Assembly also deplored the transfer by some States of their diplomatic missions to Jerusalem in violation of Security Council resolution 478 (1980).

October, 2000 :

  • Kuwait orders $150 mln for Palestinian funds -
    Kuwait"s cabinet announced on Sunday October 29, a $150 million contribution to two funds set up by an Arab summit to aid Palestinians locked in clashes with Israel. The weekly cabinet meeting said in a statement the donation would go to an $800 million al-Aqsa Fund to finance the preservation of Jerusalem"s Arab and Islamic indentity and a $200 million fund to finance the families of "martyrs" killed in clashes with Israel.

  • UN body votes to send human rights experts to Palestine -
    The United Nations Commission on Human Rights has adopted a resolution condemning "grave and massive violations of the human rights of the Palestinian people by Israel," and establishing a "human rights inquiry commission" to gather information with the aim of preventing similar occurrences in the future.

  • SAUDI KING DONATES 30M RIYALS FOR PALESTINIAN INTIFADAH
    Commencing a fund-raising campaign in support to Al-Quds intifadah, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd Bin-Abd-al-Aziz today donated 30m Saudi riyals.

  • Palestinian government inaugurates a gas field in Gaza -
    The Palestinian government inaugurated the first field for natural gas off the coast of the city of Gaza, said the Israeli radio. The radio added that the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat lit the first candle to mark the beginning of work in gas exploration. The radio also quoted Abdul Rahman Hamdi, the official in charge of energy at the Palestinian government as saying that available estimation indicate that the amounts found meet the requirements of the Palestinians and a surplus is expected to be exported.

September, 2000 :

  • Jordan, Palestine trade bypass Israeli controls -
    Jordan and the Palestinian territories will engage in door-to-door trade from October 1 with trucks rolling in and out past Israeli controls without having to transship their loads, Jordan's transport minister said Tuesday.

    "The new door-to-door system will go into effect October 1 and will reduce the cost of transporting merchandise and help promote trade between Jordan and the Palestinians," said Mohammed Al-Kalaldeh, quoted by Petra news agency reported.  Two-way trade between Jordan and the Palestinian territories reached 49 million dollars in 1999 with the balance in the favour of the kingdom.  Jordanian and Palestinian officials have often blamed Israel for the slackness of their reciprocal trade, because it obliges trucks to stop at checkpoints, discharge the merchandise they are carrying and reload it onto other vehicles which take it to their final destination.   • Nine European countries are ready to recognize the state -
    PNA Planning and International Cooperation MinisteNabil Sha'th said that nine European countries expressed readiness to recognize the Palestinian State upon its declaration whether it is declared on September 13 or at any other date. The Palestinian official, who ended a European tour, said "Greece, Italy, the Vatican, France, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg and Ireland are ready to recognize us at any time we declare the Palestinian state". He continued that seven other European countries support the Palestinian right in declaring the state but advised the Palestinian side to delay the step and not to exceed the end of this year; the seven countries: Germany, Britain, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark.   • PalTel prepares to separate from the Israeli network -
    A Palestinian official said yesterday that the Palestinian Telecommunications Company is about to take a decision to separate totally from the Israeli network in preparation for declaring the Palestinian state. Engineer Imad Falouji said Paltel is about to make a final and total separation from the Israeli network in the field of international calls. Currently, the West Bank and Gaza are connected to one network which is separate from the Israeli network but the international calls are still linked with Israeli companies. (Al-Quds)

June, 2000 :

  • France presents $29.4 million to Palestine -
    Palestinian minister of the international cooperation and planing Nabeel Shaath said that France and the Palestinian government signed an agreement of nearly 30 million dollars which is 2 times the amount of French aid.  more....

  • $21 US for Palestine infrastructure -
    The Palestinian economic council agreed on the third stage of the basic infrastructure projects for the villages and cities located in the Palestinian Authority's self-rule areas at a total cost of nearly $21 million that includes 17 cities. more....

February, 2000 :

  • Palestinian Engineers -
    The Palestinian government and the Vatican in Vatican City signed a basic agreement on their relations and that any unilateral decisions affecting Jerusalem were "morally and legally unaccepted."
    The wide-ranging agreement was signed by the delegations as Pope John Paul II, who visits Holy Land sites controlled by Israel and the Palestinians next month, discussed the conditions in the Middle East with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat at a private meeting.
    Arafat told reporters following his meeting with the pope that the pope has included Areiha (Jericho) in his tour of the area next month, and the spokesman for the Vatican confirmed this news. more....

January, 2000 :

  • New economic decisions -

    The representatives of donor countries and international organizations which follow up the assistance offered to the Palestinian people valued highly the decision made by President Arafat to establish the Higher Council for Development. The representatives said the decision is one of the most important decisions taken by the PA since its establishment in 1994 because the new council will place all revenues of the PA and all commercial operations under one party. Representatives of the UN, World Bank and Norway sent a letter to President Arafat to commend on his decision to establish that council.

  • Palestinian Higher Council -

    Representatives of the international community including UN Special Coordinator Terry Larson, Representative of the World Bank Joseph Saba, Representative of the Norwegian government in PNA praised President Arafat’s decision to establish the Higher Council for Development. They consider the decision as essential for developing Palestinian economy, building the Palestinian democratic society that is based on transparency.

  • Palestinian Higher Council(Al-Ayyam)

    Palestinian President Yasser Arafat signed yesterday a decree to establish the “Palestinian Development Higher Council”. The decision was announced by PNA Planning and International Cooperation Minister Nabil Sha’th, who said that the new council aims to promote investments in the PNA and control the revenues and financial capacities of the PNA. Sha’th added that the council will be headed by President Arafat and the members will be Mohammed Zuhdi Nashashibi, Nabil Sha’th, Maher Masri, Khaled Salam. The Palestinian minister explained that the president commissioned the council to supervise all financial revenues of the PNA and ratify the instructions and take proper decisions, stressing that as of yesterday the council has become the sole party in the PNA authorized to prepare the general budget of the revenues with the task of collecting and transferring all government revenues to the unified account of the PNA treasury. Sha’th said the council will be in charge of the Palestinian Investment Fund and will supervise all financial operations of the PNA. Moreover, the president decided to transfer the salaries directorate in the Personnel Department to the Finance Ministry in order to secure total and permanent monitoring on the recruitment and salaries issues. Sha’th said the new decisions aim to promote the performance of the PNA and its financial and administrative apparatuses and the reinforcement of transparency

  • Gaza Streets -
    Gaza Municipality decides to launch new names to 32 streets in the city.

  • Japanese/Spanish donations -  (Al-Quds)

    The Palestinian Ministry of Education will sign this morning a cooperation agreement with Japan for building classrooms in Bet Qad school in Jenin and two sanitary units in Ein Beida School in Jericho; the total amount of funds donated by Japan for this purpose is $110,000.Meanwhile, the Spanish grant of 8 vehicles to collect solid waste and maintain electricity in Gaza has arrived. The Ministry of Local Government said the vehicles will be distributed ion the municipalities that need them
  • Work Permits - (Al-Hayat Al-Jadida)

    An official spokesman said the Israeli authorities decided to reduce the age of Palestinian singles who desire to get work permit to enter the Green line from 25 years to 21 years. Shlomo Dror, the so-called Coordinator of Israeli activities in the Palestinian lands, said the minimum age allowed now is 25 for the single and 23 for the married and 21 for the married with one child. He said there are between 40,000 and 60,000 Palestinian working without permits and that the new decision might help them to get permits.
  • Tel Aviv and Ramallah - (Ayyam Al-Arab)
    The title “The International Festival for Human Rights Films” was launched yesterday on the festival to be held next month in Tel Aviv and Ramallah cities. The festival will show 48 films from various countries, including Israel and Palestine. The festival will focus on issue related to human rights such as the rights of children, women and wars, in addition to films from South Africa that will reflect the situation there after liberating South Africa from the Apartheid system. Journalist Daoud Kuttab, one of the organizers and director of modern media institute in Al-Quds University, said the decision to cooperate with Cinematheque came for several reasons since the festival will give the chance to generalize the topic of human rights. He added the festival will focus on the right of the individual to live in dignity and that the Arab-Israeli conflict issue was excluded for this year.

  • New Regions - (Al-Ayyam)
    Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat announced yesterday that 110 square kms were transferred from Zone B to Zone A and that 166 square kms were transferred from Zone C to Zone B as part of the redeployment operation that was executed yesterday and last Wednesday. He added that the withdrawal from 6.1% which is scheduled to be implemented this month means transferring 335 square kms to Zone A. Erekat said this means that a ratio of 2.18% was transferred to Zone A and 7.24% transferred to Zone B, which means that the Palestinian jurisdiction included now 9.42% from the total area of the West Bank.

  • Insurance -
    A new draft law for health insurance discussed by the Council of Ministers
  • Camps -
    The PA received two camps from the occupation troops, one near Al-Bathan in Nablus "Joseph" and the other one near Fahma village in Jenin "Barak". The two camps are part of five camps that will be transferred to the PA within the second phase of redeployment; all the camps will become civil installations because they are located in Zone B.
