PALESTINE
May, 2001 :
-
Europe
puts Sharon on the spot to halt bloodshed -
The European Union, in its
clearest statement yet on the Middle East, said Wednesday (May 16,
2001) it was up to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to make the
first move to end seven months of spiraling violence with
Palestinians.
-
Palestinians
mark Nakba -
Since that ominous day in May
1948, the Palestinian people have been paying the price of this
injustice and the Nakba, in all its appalling manifestations, has
been relived day and day again. No other nation has suffered
a similar fate in modern times: the uprooting, the ethnic
cleansing, the massacres, the humiliation and the intimidation.
The most ironic reality about the Palestinians today is that the
historic injustice of the Nakba continues to be perpetrated until
today.

Jordan,
Palestine trade bypass Israeli controls -
Jordan and the Palestinian
territories will engage in door-to-door trade from October 1 with
trucks rolling in and out past Israeli controls without having to
transship their loads, Jordan's transport minister said Tuesday.
"The
new door-to-door system will go into effect October 1 and will
reduce the cost of transporting merchandise and help promote trade
between Jordan and the Palestinians," said Mohammed Al-Kalaldeh,
quoted by Petra news agency reported. Two-way
trade between Jordan and the Palestinian territories reached 49
million dollars in 1999 with the balance in the favour of the
kingdom. Jordanian and Palestinian officials have often
blamed Israel for the slackness of their reciprocal trade, because
it obliges trucks to stop at checkpoints, discharge the
merchandise they are carrying and reload it onto other vehicles
which take it to their final destination. (AFP
