M/V Axel Johnson IV (SMPN)
Built at Wärtsilä Shipyard, Åbo, Finland as new construction, hull number 1169. She was launched in January 1, 1969 and delivered in June 1, 1969. She was sold in 1986 to the Greek ship owner Antonis Lelakis and his Regency Cruises and registered on Amafiss Navigation Co, Cyprus. The plan was to convert her into the modern cruiser ship Regent Sun, but things didn’t quite happen that way and the ship was sold 1988 to Navy Club Italia S.r.l., Rom and renamed to Italia. She entered the T.Mariotti yards in Genoa in 1988, and between 1988-1989 she was converting to a beautiful cruiser ship. The idea behind the whole project was to create jobs for Italian shipyard workers. With some prodding from the Italian government, in the form of construction subsidies, they convinced Costa Line to take over. Then she was launched she renamed to Costa Marina and she leave the shipyard in 1990 for Costa Cruise Lines N.V. She was from the beginning equipped with two Wärtsiläbuilt Pielstick engine 16PC2-V and two 12PC2-V delivering 19.136 kW. She was at 16080 tons d.w. and had a speed at 23 knot. Axel Johnson’s first commander was Dag Hultén and chief engineer G. A. Mattsson.
