Excerpts from Huichol Myths & Tales
Translated from Spanish by Arla Macias

From: Kauymali Opposes the Thorn Apple
Kauymali communicated with the Sun. He wanted to discover how to counteract harmful
effects of the Black Magic of Datura, of whose corpse was born wolves, lions, jaguars,
rattlesnakes and other animals that threaten the Huicholes.

From: Kauymali Vaccinated the People.
Also, an epidemic began and it was revealed to kauymali that he must vaccinate the Huicholes
who were not sick with the pus extracted from the sick.
He then had to chant all night to tatevali. (The Grandfather Fire, the greatest shaman and medicine man.)

From: The Myth of the Corn
There he lived in the house of the white daughters, the Corn Girls born to wakuri.
The boy made friends and played in the streets and plazas of Cerro Azul.
They ran into many dangers because the ants wanted to steal them.
On one occasion, when sikoakami was asleep, unable to steal him, they took his eyelashes and hair.
When he woke up he was bald and looked very bad. They had left him almost blind.

From: The Myth of the Sun
The red tide sustains the hearts of the animals of the Sun, such as the small fly, which flies around the
votive jars of the God of the Sea. With their wings they baptise the jars with water.
The Goddesses of the Sea gave this task to them.

Spitting in the ocean he made the small woodpecker, tsimakai, the bird, hotai, and the guacamayo
(large colorful parrot), whose feathers are special for the votive arrows of the Sun.

These are just a few of the interesting paragraphs from this 46 page book which contains many Huichol tales & myths.
The book is not intended as an educational resource, but for your information, entertainment and hopefully, to provide a little insight into the beliefs of the Huichol Indians of the states of Jalisco and Nayarit, Mexico.
