 The Purpose of the Centre

Every year many people become permanently disabled because of stroke, (traffic) accidents, tumour or diseases. Kachere Rehabilitation and Training Centre in Blantyre offers a free-of-charge intensive in-patient rehabilitation service to help the patients to improve their movement skills and to find ways to adjust to their new circumstances

How it Started

The building complex of the Centre was constructed in the beginning of the 90’s with the assistance of the European Union and Christoffel Blindenmission. The Centre started admitting patients in May 1995.

Kachere Rehabilitation & Training Centre is located next to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Chipatala Avenue, Blantyre. It has the facilities to accommodate more than 35 patients. On average a patient stays for a period of 3 to 4 months at the Centre.

Whom we Help

Intensive rehabilitation is provided to a range of disabled people who acquired disability due to various causes, e.g. Stroke, (Traffic) Accident,
TB of the Spine.

Each patient is given individualised rehabilitation (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy) as seen in this real story below (name changed)

After a car accident Grace Mphiri (38) from Ntcheu had to recover from severe damage of the spine. She stayed 3 month at the District Hospital and finally came to the Kachere Rehabilitation & Training Centre.
She had been paralysed since the accident. Her legs were to weak to carry her, so she sat in a wheelchair all the time.

“The first thing we did at the Centre was to put her on her legs again”, the physiotherapist said. “She couldn’t walk but we helped her, and little by little she gained back her strength and self-confidence.”

After 4 months she was stable enough to walk with 2 crutches, sit on the floor and take care of her 4 children again!
