|
Sarmizegetusa, a village located at the base of Retezat Mountains, 18 kilometers west of the town Hateg, houses the acient site of the Roman settlement Sarmizegetusa Ulpia Traiana. It was founded by the Roman Emperor Traianus in the 2nd century AD as the capital of the province Dacia, after conquering it. The city was named Colonia Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dacica Sarmizegetusa. Life flourished in the newly founded Roman colony, therefore it was named Dacia Felix (lat. felix=happy).
