The town of Sebes was the stage for many sieges and battles, the town being besieged by the turksa couple of times. In one such battle, the town, including students of the "Gymnasium", fought fiercely to defend itself. The students took refuge in one of the town's towers named afterwards the "Student's tower". The turks took some of the students prisoners, one of them managing to escape, wrote a book in Rome titled: "The Turks, their deeds and customs".

The town is mentioned in many documents in different languages under different names: MÜHLBACH, MALEMBACH, SEBUS, SEBES, SEBES-ALBA
