Litronic with dynamic headlight beam adjustment For the Boxster S it is also possible to order the Litronic with dynamic headlight beam adjustment and headlight cleaning system as an optional extra. This driving light and headlamps are a new development based on the familiar Litronic technology. A special feature patented by Porsche is employed when switching on the headlamps. With these optional equipment, the front indicators have white instead of yellow covers. The Litronic uses the properties of the gas-discharge lamp and comprises the following components:
The lens and the special shape of the poly-ellipsoidal (PES) reflectors in a certain size allow the light beam to achieve the greatest range possible, both in the driving direction and to the right and left, which is particularly beneficial on windy roads. The Litronic offers the following advantages in the anti-dazzle light area:
Dynamic headlight beam adjustment: The Litronic optional extra has a dynamic headlight beam adjustment. This contributes to improving traffic safety, automatically prevents oncoming traffic from being dazzled while accelerating, and improves illumination while braking. Without dynamic headlight beam adjustment, the range of the light beam is reduced when braking, caused by the pitching motion of the vehicle, resulting in a considerable loss of vision. The dynamic headlight beam adjustment compensates for this disadvantage by spontaneously raising the cone of light, dependent on the nose diving of the vehicle at the front axle. The dynamic headlight beam adjustment is supplied with the following:
The axle sensors are fitted to the floor of the car body at the front and rear. The compression travel paths are measured, therefore calculating the tilt of the vehicle by means of a rotating lever and intermediate rods, which are connected to the relevant wheel suspension. The signals from the axle sensors are received by the control device, which then calculates the tilting angle of the vehicle and evaluates its speed. With this information an optimum angle of headlight beam is calculated and a control signal sent to the step motors in the headlight. These signals are dependent on the driving conditions (constant driving, acceleration, braking). Step motors are implemented to adjust the headlight reflector. These are used to swivel the reflectors and initiate the dynamic headlight beam adjustment. The dynamic headlight beam adjustment offers the following advantages to customers:
Head lamps: By using an H7 light bulb and better reflector geometry, the new Litronic already improves the fundamental brightness of the headlamps. The improved reflector geometry is made possible by a greater design depth and the consequent enlarged solid angle for enveloping the light source. Raising the anti-dazzle light when the head- lamps are switched on ensures excellent vision and brightness. A comparison with the predecessor system is pointless. This system, patented by Porsche, is only possible in connection with the dynamic headlight beam adjustment and is being used here for the first time. When the headlamps are switched on, the anti- dazzle light is tilted upwards by 1.2 degrees in approx. 0.3 s by the setting elements of the dynamic headlight beam adjustment. The raised anti-dazzle light creates very homogeneous and wide illumination, which is particularly beneficial on very winding roads. The halogen headlamp has been optimised for long ranges and offers its biggest advantage when driving in a straight line at high speeds.
Headlight cleaning system: To avoid dazzling oncoming traffic with scattered light resulting from dirty headlights, the new Litronic is fitted with a headlight cleaning system as standard. This is especially necessary here because of the high intensity of the light beam. |
